Users Coming Off Weight-Loss Medications Put On Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Dieters

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis reveals that individuals who stop using blockbuster slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional lifestyle programs.

Published data in a prominent medical journal shows that while obese individuals often shed about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"People using such medications must be aware of the potential of fast weight regain when the therapy is stopped," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain means a return to starting mass in about a year and a half.

Comparing Approaches

The study, which reviewed 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

Researchers point out that individuals who lose weight through dieting usually have a more gradual creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

Understanding the Rapid Regain

Doctors believe the mechanism of the injections accounts for the amplified regain.

The injections imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could diminish responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' means appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating much more probable."

A Chronic Disease?

The NHS recommend the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

Many experts contend that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy might need to be long-term.

This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "highlight the long-term character of obesity," akin to managing conditions like diabetes.

Patient Accounts

Users who have come off the jabs explain a intense resurgence of cravings.

"It felt as if something that goes on and you become starving," said one woman.

This challenge is compounded if individuals have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Significant Adoption

Recent estimates show that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand being substantial.

  • Use is greater among females than men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Finally, clinicians stress that while these medications are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone cure and lasting health benefits relies on ongoing behavioural management.
